Touch-Me-Not - Version 1

impatiens capensis

I have finally found a native wildflower in my yard.  This little tiny orange beauty blooms in the shade behind our RV which borders the woods.  Nobody planted this guy in a past life.  He appeared all on his own.  It's also called a touch-me-not because when the seed pods are mature they explode with the slightest touch, dispersing seeds everywhere.  What a fun image.  Oddly, I searched and searched and couldn't find any myth or story connected to this little bloom which is sad. Other plants have histories of igniting love and death.   These cup-shaped orange and red blossoms are loved by ruby-throated hummingbirds that frequent my yard.  I think I am just going to have to write a story about the hummingbird and the exploding seed pod.  Stay tuned.
