Creature from the Bloom
A single eye on a graceful stalk is waving in the breeze while this creature from the bloom surveys the scene. Six fuzzy fingertips reach from the center of this yellow-throated being. Sniffing, sensing what is. I wonder what flowers would be like with eyes? Noses? They are so like us humans in some ways. Alive. Growing. Reproducing. Dying. Do they wonder about the world around them like I do? What would it be like to be a flower like this Autumn Red daylily. Autumn alive for one day in July. One day to open wide up, showing off in maroon and yellow that fades to orange. I can't imagine what feelings I would have, closing up tonight, shriveling away to reappear again next year. It makes me grateful for the long lives we have, hopefully, as humans. If we take care. Maybe this day lilies is watching me, I smile to myself as I focus in to take a close-up. I imagine he's gathering information about the woman in the polka-dot boots, to bring back home to others in his clump. To share next summer when we meet again. Bursting forth for one day.
