I've been staring at clumps of daylily leaves, their ramrod straight stalks and plump little buds for weeks now. I wonder, when will you bloom? My little herald of the summer season. According to Greek mythology, Zeus and his wife Hera created daylilies. Although I have yet to wander my garden while I should be sleeping, if I were, supposedly I'd see these guys sleeping as well. My online imperfect sources of information tell me that they are only open during the day. And, only for one day although I would argue that "fact." This guy, alone amongst his flowery kind, greeted me yesterday on the morning of the summer solstice. He's waving at me now. He must be the watchout flower, checking to see if it's safe for all to bloom. Another plant my PictureThis plant identifier tells me is, "perfect for gardeners with brown thumbs," daylilies are associated with the Virgin Mary, honesty, innocence and perfection. And this orangish yellow bloom symbolizes joy, love, courage, beauty and devotion. Out of the million other things this little flower symbolizes my favorite is that it's a symbol of flirtation. Blooming at sunrise and closing up at sunset it's like the transient nature of a flirt. Another plant I never planted that just pops up in every one of my gardens, winking at me, encouraging me and my brown thumb to garden on. Tonight before I lay down to sleep I will look out my bedroom window at my Shasta daisies glowing under the moonlight while my daylilies sleep. And I'll remember to live with more peace in the transient nature of life. My sister was ill and now she is recovering. I used to rock my granddaughter to sleep and she's now driving a car. May the lesson of the daylily comfort me forever more.
